Please see the tl;dr after as this requires some explanation. I want to make something for my wife and since I am a bit of a looney toon and I seem to enjoy the sensation of drowning after jumping into the deep end to teach myself to swim, I have decided I want to try making her a dress.
My experience is pretty much zero. I had an aunt and mom who sewn quite often when I was growing up, so I’ve been around it. I got an idea to some extent of what I need to have to complete the project. They live too far away to help me with this en devour.
I have a sewing machine, but don’t ask me what kind. I need to make sure it even works as its been sitting in my closet for years and it was purchased at Good Will and has never been used since we bought it. My wife actually bought it, but never got into it.
I know I need fabric, a pattern, thread, and of course, a working sewing machine. Other than that, I am not sure. I need her measurements and though this is going to be a surprise, I understand if that just can’t happen. I have picked out a dress I know she likes but I have no idea if it is completely insane for me to even try this with it being my first time sewing. Like I said, I like to jump into things and learn as I go, and I do well in previous experiences doing that, but I also know there are limits to that method of madness.
I’d appreciate any input about what pattern I should use to complete the dress in the link below and also, if that is just way to much even for an adventurous beginner.
tl;dr Husband wants to sew wife a dress and has never sewn before but is an ambitious and adventurous learner and looking for advice on how to proceed.
